Fluid Ounces vs Weight Ounces: Don't Mix Them Up

Fluid ounces measure volume. Avoirdupois ounces measure weight. Here's how to tell them apart and why it matters.

Volume ≠ weight

One of the most common measurement mistakes is treating fluid ounces (fl oz) and weight ounces (oz) as interchangeable. They’re not.

  • Fluid ounce (fl oz): a unit of volume — how much space a liquid occupies.
  • Ounce (oz): a unit of weight — how heavy something is.

Why this matters for pint conversions

Pint conversions only apply to fluid ounces. If a recipe says “8 oz of flour,” that’s weight — converting it to pints makes no sense.
