The bar pour landscape
Bartenders work primarily in fluid ounces in the US. In the UK, pints dominate for beer, but cocktails still use ounces or millilitres.
US bar standards
- Standard shot: 1.5 fl oz (sometimes 1 fl oz)
- US pint of beer: 16 fl oz
- Pitcher: typically 60–64 fl oz (roughly 4 US pints)
UK bar standards
- Imperial pint of beer: 20 fl oz (568 mL)
- Half pint: 10 fl oz
- Cocktail measures: often 25 mL or 50 mL (metric)
Converting on the fly
A 12 fl oz pour of mixer:
- US pints: 0.75 pt
- Imperial pints: 0.60 pt
